Wind Chill Calculator
Calculate the perceived temperature based on wind speed and air temperature. Get frostbite warnings and cold weather safety recommendations.
Input Parameters
This calculator estimates the temperature felt by the body as a result of wind speed and actual air temperature. The calculator works for air temperatures between -50°F and 50°F.
Result
Enter wind speed and air temperature, then click Calculate to determine the wind chill factor.
About Wind Chill
What is Wind Chill?
Wind chill is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body on exposed skin due to the flow of air. The faster the wind speed, the more rapidly heat is carried away from the body, lowering skin temperature and eventually internal body temperature.
How Wind Chill Works:
- Wind strips away the thin layer of warm air next to skin
- Increases the rate of heat loss from the body
- Makes it feel colder than the actual air temperature
- Can lead to hypothermia and frostbite more quickly
Warning Signs
- Numbness or tingling in extremities
- Skin turning red and painful, then pale and hard
- Shivering (body's attempt to generate heat)
- Confusion or difficulty speaking
- Drowsiness or very low energy
Protection Guidelines:
- Cover all exposed skin when wind chill is below 0°F
- Limit outdoor time when wind chill is extreme
- Keep dry - wet clothing loses insulation value
- Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia
- Keep emergency supplies in vehicles during winter
